Gum Disease
Gum disease is a stealthy and silent predator and the leading cause of tooth loss for US adults. Early stage periodontal disease, gingivitis, has few noticeable symptoms. These include slight swelling, redness, or tenderness of the gums. Patients with gingivitis may experience bleeding after they brush their teeth. However, left untreated, gingivitis can escalate to full-fledged periodontitis, which has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, pregnancy complications, and problems for diabetics.
When you visit Dr. Courtney or Dr. Wolt, expect a thorough periodontal evaluation to diagnose gum disease. If we find that you have gingivitis or periodontal disease in any form, we will recommend therapy, which may include:
- A deep cleaning to remove hardened plaque from below the gum line
- Root planing to smooth tooth surfaces and discourage bacteria attachment
- Antibiotic therapy to battle infection
Advanced cases or periodontal disease will be referred to a trusted periodontists for specialized care.
